Tamiya Comical Avante: Part 1

Part 1: Time for something fancy

New Kit in Box

When I first saw the Comical Avante (58678) it couldn’t catch my interest at all. I thought: ‘Well just a new bodyshell variation of the Comical Grasshopper, Frog, Hornet…- whatever. A funny looking, little rear wheel drive Buggy, doing wheelies all the time but not driving well.’

Luckily (some months?) later, but not too late, I realized that this kit is not based on the WR-02CB Chassis but on the 4WD GF-01C. I thought: ‘So this is basically a new version of the Heavy Dump Truck (58622) and dozens others... . Let’s look up Videos on YouTube. Ok… it does wheelies… all the time… but it has a cool appearance.’

I still hesitated buying it, since I already own so many cars, but on a lowered price tag of 149,90€
I couldn’t resist.

What I like about the Comical Avante:

  • Cheap Entry Level Car, you could hand over to Kids
  • Good Value for Money (4WD, Oil filled Shocks, ESC included)
  • Proven Kit, Spare Parts are cheap and widely available
  • Funny Driver Figure, with that cheeky grin
  • Includes Light Buckets (LEDs make everything so much better…)
  • Some Option Parts would really make it stand out

What I don’t like about the Comical Avante:

  • Kit does not contain ball bearings (“Hey Tamiya, we live in 2021. Ball Bearings are mandatory, not an option!”)
  • Philips head screws (I prefer Allen key.)
  • Many self-tapping screws that screw directly into the plastic
  • No Tire inserts included
  • Ugly looking wiring with the ESC on top of the battery
  • Plastic wheel hexes
  • simple Dogbones instead of CVD-Drive Shafts (But keept the price in mind.)

Probably the option to install LEDs is the main reason why this kit got me hooked. I also like the Driver Figure but since this is going to be the first time that I paint one it is providing a new challenge for me. ‘Don’t mess it up.’ I reckon those two features really round of the overall package.
