Tamiya Comical Avante: Part 6

Part 6: Adjustable Upper Control Arms

adjustable upper control arms installed

Back to the Kit Parts

So I decided to switch back to the standard Suspension Arms that come with the Comical Avante Kit, instead of making the car narrower. At least I wanted to have adjustable upper arms. Searching through my spare parts boxes I found some steel turnbuckles that where leftover from an Exotek Formula One suspension. Furthermore a bag of Tamiya’s newer open face adjusters #54869 that where meant to go on my TT02, as well as some M3 ball connector nuts similar to #53640 or #53599. If I remember right the ball nuts came with PSM-Racing SSBB Shocktowers that I use on my TT02-S.

replacements for the fixed arms

The GF-01 Chassis has D=4mm holes for the upper arms, therefore I used the screws that came with the Yeah Racing Long Span Set, as they have a 4mm shaft. In case you don’t have such special screws there is a simple solution. Some flanged tubes like Tamiya’s #9804958 or #3585060 would allow you to reduce the hole from 4mm to 3mm and fit a longer screw. The chassis attachment points are about 5.6mm wide, so #50593 might be a cheaper option but require some shortening.

these flanged tubes fit nicely

On the rear axle the ball cups and turnbuckles fitted perfectly but on the front I had to cut everything slightly shorter. I guess about 18mm long turnbuckles like #9805761 should work fine.

time for some Proxxon-Action

the front turnbuckles and ball cups needed to be shorter

The lower arms are a two piece assembly with self-tapping screws. Because I don’t like self-tapping screws I tried normal M3’s but the plastic is rather soft so I couldn’t feel them tightening down. Therefore I decided to install some Helicoil inserts.

maybe a bit overkill

the shorter armes go on the front, the longer ones on the rear

Last but not least the heads of the kingpin screws showed a gap to the C-Hubs, even when fully screwed down. I thought it would be better to put a shim under the screw head.

I’m pretty pleased with the final result. Everything moves freely without excessive play. It allows me to adjust camber and looks cooler then the fixed upper arms.

a result I can live with
